Pesticides in the Households of Healthy Volunteers and Young Patients With Leukaemia

Rationale: Learning about pesticides in the households of young patients with leukaemia and in the households of healthy volunteers may help scientists better understand the risk of leukaemia.Purpose: This epidemiology study is identifying environmental factors related to the risk of leukaemia in the households of healthy volunteers and in the households of young patients with leukaemia.

Objective:

Outline:

Approximately 3-6 months after completing the tier I interview on a separate NCI epidemiologic study, participants undergo a tier II interview and home assessment over 1 hour to identify the presence of certain chemical compounds (e.g. pollutants, pesticides, and automobile exhaust) in their home environment. Participants are evaluated for exposure to these compounds through a survey of household products used and through collection of environmental samples. Samples of dust from the participant’s vacuum cleaner bag or windowsill are obtained for analysis, as well as air samples obtained via an air monitor which is placed in the home for two weeks and then forwarded to the study laboratory for analysis. Pesticide-treated crops grown within a 1,200 meter radius of the house are mapped.
