Primary ovarian failure refers to the failure of the ovaries to produce mature eggs or to produce them in sufficient quantities, due to a dysfunction in the ovaries (as opposed to a dysfunction in the pituitary gland, which causes secondary ovarian failure). It is also known as primary ovarian insufficiency, premature menopause and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. It causes amenorrhoea (the absence of menstrual cycles).
