Upper motor neurons are brain cells that carry motor information from the brain down the spinal cord. Upper motor neurons terminate at specific levels in the spinal cord, near the area that they innervate. For example, upper motor neurons responsible for movement of the arms will terminate near the top of the spinal cord, whereas the upper motor neurons responsible for leg movement will continue to the bottom of the spinal cord. From here, information is passed on to effector neurons, which carry the information from the spinal cord to the muscle.
