Toxic megacolon is a life-threatening bowel condition that occurs as a result of other gastrointestinal conditions (e.g. inflammatory bowel disease). It is characterised by the rapid dilation (widening) of the colon, which causes symptoms including abdominal pain or tenderness, fever and rapid heart rate. Surgery to remove the colon is usually required to prevent perforation of the colon and possible death.
