Bursae are fluid-filled sacs which help to lubricate joints in the body. The shoulder requires a large number of bursae to lubricate the multiple points of possible friction between the muscles and the joint capsule. The major bursae in the shoulder include the subacromial bursa, the subdeltoid bursa and the subscapular bursa.
