Eosinophilic oesophagitis is a disease affecting the oesophagus characterised by large numbers of eosinophils in the muscular wall which causes inflammation and difficulty swallowing. People with this condition often experience food getting stuck in their throat (food bolus).
Eosinophilic oesophagitis can also produce similar symptoms to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) but requires different treatments. Eosinophilic oesophagitis is related to food allergy and other allergic conditions. It is diagnosed by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsy.
