Macular oedema is a diabetic eye disease and a type of diabetic retinopathy. It occurs as a complication of either non-proliferative or proliferative diabetic retinopathy, when changes to the eye’s blood vessels which occur in retinopathy begin to affect the macula. It is a site-threatening condition which can cause sudden and unexpected vision loss. Regular eye examinations and good diabetes management can prevent the disease. This page outlines the prevalence, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of macular oedema.
