This research study is aiming to identify the genes that predispose someone to developing Bipolar Disorder. We are looking for families with two or more people affected by Bipolar Disorder. The participants of the study are notified of the progress of the study annually through newsletters and at the end of the study they will be provided with a report.

Bipolar disorder is characterized by high and low mood states that generally last weeks or months. This common condition, occurring in one to four percent of the population, runs in families.
This study is aimed at finding out the specific genes that make people prone to developing bipolar disorder.

Eligibility & Criteria
Inclusion Criteria:
We are interested in identifying medium to large-sized multigenerational pedigrees that:

Include at least two living affected individuals (at least one of whom is diagnosed as Bipolar I)

Have a single disease source (i.e., the condition comes from one side of the family)

Have illness in at least two generations.
