Water may contain disease-causing micro-organisms or toxic substances (sometimes the same micro-organisms as contaminate food), which can enter your body and make you ill if you drink the water. These are known as water-borne diseases. Contaminated water may also cause water-borne disease if it is used for washing food, especially raw food like salad.
