Toxoplasmosis is an acute infection caused by the organism Toxoplasma gondii. In healthy adults, the infection often goes unnoticed because the symptoms are mild and similar to symptoms of other diseases like the flu. However, in patients with suppressed immune function, the infection can cause serious symptoms such as inflammation of the eyes and brain.
If it occurs during pregnancy, toxoplasmosis can be transmitted congenitally, that is from the mother to her foetus. Health risks for the newborn baby are considerable and include birth defects and complications later in life, including blindness.
