Sub-arachnoid haemorrhage is a life-threatening condition characterised by bleeding in the brain which has the potential to cause a stroke. This type of stroke occurs when blood leaks out of the vessels in the vicinity of a membrane in the brain known as the arachnoid (hence the name sub-arachnoid), usually when an aneurysm (weak spot in the blood vessel wall) ruptures. Prompt treatment to stop bleeding is required to prevent death.
