Spina bifida is a neural tube defect. The baby’s brain and spine develop froma neural tube in the first four weeks of pregnancy. Spina bifida is caused when the neural tube does not fully develop, leaving a gap or split in the spine. Most neural tube defects can be prevented by taking folic acid before and after conception.
