Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG)-bound testosterone is testosterone that circulates in the blood bound to SHBG. SHBG binds very tightly to testosterone and prevents testosterone separating to form bonds with other molecules or receptor sites. As testosterone bound to SHBG cannot bind to cells, it is considered biologically unavailable, that is, not available to fulfil testosterone functions in cells.
