Ripening of the cervix refers to the process where the cervix becomes softer, flatter, and dilates open in preparation for labour, in order to allow the baby to come out of the womb and into the birth canal. A ‘ripe’ cervix is soft and dilating. The ‘ripeness’ of the cervix may be measured using the ‘Bishop’s score’. Induction of labour may be used to ripen the cervix.
