Mammary glands are the glands located in the breast which produce and secrete breastmilk in the process known as lactation. Their function is controlled by hormones produced by the pituitary gland called oxytocin and prolactin. These hormones are produced in response to infant suckling, so that the mammary glands only produce milk when they are emptied.
