Bovine spongiform encephalopathy is commonly referred to as mad cow disease. It is a neurological condition in which tiny holes form in the brain as a result of misshaped proteins (prions) gathering there. The disease mainly affects cows, but humans can become infected if they eat meat from a contaminated animal.
