Free testosterone refers to testosterone that circulates in the blood without binding to a carrier protein. Because it remains unbound, free testosterone is available for use by cells with androgen receptor sites, which depend on androgens such as testosterone to regulate their functions. Approximately 2% of testosterone in blood is free or unbound testosterone, while the remaining 98% is transported through the body bound to carrier proteins.
