Founder effects occur when a population is established by a very small number of individuals from a larger population. There is less genetic variation in this newly founded population and therefore this population may differ genetically and phenotypically from the larger population. Founder effects are often more obvious in populations that are geographically and/or ethnically isolated, i.e. Roma gypsy populations in Europe, the populations of Iceland, Finland and Tasmania.
