FODMAPs is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Monosaccharides, Disaccharides and Polyols. These are a group of sugars that are poorly digested by the small intestine, so they enter the large intestine undigested. Once in the large intestine, they are fermented by bacteria and produce a range of gastrointestinal symptoms including abdominal pain, altered bowel movements and flatulence. These symptoms are typical of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
