Diverticulitis is a form of bowel disease characterised by the infection of one or more inflamed pouches in the colon. It is thought to be a diet-related condition and arises mostly in people who eat low-fibre diets. Such a diet can cause constipation and difficulty passing stools, which puts pressure on the colon and leads to the formation of inflamed pouches. The pouches may then trap faeces and become infected, causing symptoms such as abdominal tenderness, bloating and fever.
