The cornified layer is one of three layers of the epidermal (outermost) layer of skin and forms the skin’s surface. Skin cells produced in the basal layer of the epidermis migrate to the cornified layer where they die and are shed, allowing new skin cells to move outward through the epidermis and constantly regenerate the skin.
