Basal layer
The basal layer is one of three layers which comprise the epidermis, or outer layer of skin. It underlies the other two epidermal layers, the squamous and cornified layers. The basal layer is where new skin cells are produced. The skin cells then move from the basal layer to the squamous layer and eventually form part of the cornified, or tough outer layer of skin. The basal layer also contains melanocytes, the cells which give the skin colour.
