Conchae (singular concha) are bony protrusions in the nasal cavity which may also be called lobes or turbinate bones. There are four in each nostril. The conchae create turbulence when air is inspired into the nasal cavity. This causes the air to swirl around and increases contact between entering air and mucus in the nasal cavity, increasing the likelihood that pathogens in the air will become trapped in the mucus.
