Chemokines are proteins belonging to the cytokine family. Like other cytokines they are involved in the immune system and immune responses. The primary immune function of chemokines is to attract white blood cells called leukocytes, to the site of inflammation during inflammatory responses. However, chemokines also appear to play a role in immune functions which do not involve white blood cells.
