Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects the brain. It is usually diagnosed in young children.

Children and adults with ASD have difficulties communicating and interacting, which vary from mild to severe. The autism spectrum refers to a variety and range of severity of symptoms experienced by people with the disorder.

The term autism spectrum disorder was introduced in 2013, to replace a group of terms (Asperger’s syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder and generalised autistic disorder) which were previously used to refer to autism spectrum disorder. People diagnosed before 2013 may still use the older terms.
