Your respiratory physician will ask about your symptoms, particularly daytime somnolence (sleepiness), accidents, snoring, pauses in your breathing when you are alseep, diet and drug and alcohol use. Clearly it would be beneficial to have your partner present so they can answer questions about your sleep pattern.

What are the problems caused by poor sleep?

A healthy sleeping pattern is necessary for short and long-term benefits. In the short term, poor sleep can lead to lethargy, and increase the risk of accidents or errors. In the long run, poor sleep increases the risk of mental health issues, as well as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Do smoking, alcohol or caffeine have an affect on sleep?

Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are stimulants and so they will affect your quality of sleep, or ability to sleep itself.

Examination

Your sleep physician will concentrate on examining your upper airway and lungs.
