Protozoan (plural protozoa) is a single celled organism. Most protozoan are so small they can only be seen under a microscope. Many protozoan cause infectious diseases. For example the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii causes the food-borne illness toxoplasmosis, while the vector (insect) borne disease malaria is caused by protozoa from the Plasmodium family.
