Pneumococcal disease is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by infection with a type of bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. The bacteria may travel to many different areas of the body, producing disease including meningitis (inflammation around the brain), septicaemia (poisoning of the blood), or pneumonia (infection of the lungs). Children and adults can be protected from some types of pneumococcal disease through immunisation.
