Perimenopause refers to the period of transition from normal menstrual cycles to menopause. It is often referred to as the menopause transition. In the perimenopausal period, hormone production fluctuates and menstrual bleeding occurs irregularly and typically at longer intervals. The perimenopause ends one year after the woman’s last menstrual bleeding, at which time she is said to have reached menopause.
