Monoclonal antibodies are genetically engineered antibodies which target tumour cell antigens; that is, substances produced by cancer cells which the body recognises as foreign. They were developed with the aim of overcoming a limitation of other cancer treatments like chemotherapy, which are unable to target specific cancer cells and therefore interact with all the body’s cells.
