Malpresentation refers to a part of a baby, such as the feet, shoulder or face, coming out of the womb and birth canal before the crown of the head. Examples include shoulder presentation, transverse presentation and breech presentation. Normally the baby’s head should present first from the birth canal. Malpresentation increases the risks of birth for the mother and the baby, and in some cases vaginal delivery may not be possible (the baby will get stuck), so caesarean delivery may be necessary.
