Fluvax is the name of a vaccine which is given to people >5 years of age to prevent influenza. It contains inactivated particles of three different types of the influenza virus. The inactivated particles do not cause illness but they do cause the body’s immune system to produce antibodies which protect against the types of influenza included in the virus. New types of influenza are added to the vaccine each year to ensure it protects individuals against influenza types which have recently been causing illness in Australia. The vaccine should be taken each year to provide protection against influenza.
