Ergotamines are a class of medications used to treat individuals with migraine who do not respond to simple pain killers like paracetamol and aspirin. They work by narrowing the blood vessels which feed the head and thus reduce blood flow to the head. They may be used for prophylactic (preventative) or acute treatment.
