Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) involves the replacement of enzymes in diseases where there is an absence or deficiency in naturally occurring enzymes found in the body that are required for essential bodily function.
For example, see Gaucher disease, where a deficiency in the enzyme glucocerebrosidase leads to the accumulation of fat that cannot be digested.
An example of ERT is the drug Cerezyme (imiglucerase).
