If a woman contracts chickenpox (varicella) when pregnant her child will have a 2% chance of developing congenital varicella syndrome which can have serious consequences for the baby including: neurologic abnormalities, visual defects, increased risk of developing herpes zoster during infancy or childhood, hypoplastic limbs and skin scarring.
