The cigarette smoke condensate is tar. Tar is a mixture of the compounds in cigarette smoke which condensate (turns from a gas to a solid) once in the lungs to form a sticky brown substance. Tar is made of nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and a wide range other chemicals. These chemicals are cancer causing so when they are in the solid ‘tar’ form in the lung they are the main cause of lung and throat cancer. Tar is also the part of cigarette smoke which causes the yellow-brown stains on teeth and fingers.
