Cauda equine syndrome is a rare and serious disorder that affects the bundle of nerves at the base of the spine. The nerves are responsible for regulating sensations in the legs and pelvic region. In cauda equine the nerve bundle is compressed, typically resulting in lack of sensation and reduced mobility in the legs and/or pelvis, including lack of control of the bowel and bladder. Immediate treatment is necessary to avoid permanent paralysis.
