Asthma preventers contain a low dose of an ‘inhaled corticosteroid’ which when used regularly prevent asthma symptoms such as breathlessness, wheeze and cough from occurring. They work by reducing inflammation of the airways which prevents asthma flare ups and attacks. There are a several medications and brands that are classified as preventers. People who have been prescribed an asthma preventer inhaler/puffer should take care to use it as instructed by their doctor.
Note: Preventers should NOT be used in an acute asthma attack instead use your asthma reliever medication to relieve asthma symptoms during an asthma attack.
