Caffeine is a natural substance found in more than 60 plant species, including coffee beans and tea leaves. It is a commonly consumed drug which is found in coffee, tea, chocolate, energy drinks and some medications. It is one of a group of drugs known as methylxanthines. These drugs stimulate the central nervous system and have a diuretic effect, which means that they increase urinary output. Caffeine can improve alertness and relieve fatigue in the short term, however regular consumption of large amounts of caffeine can lead to addiction.
